Three Options to Add Video as a Background Image in Google Sites

April 29th, 2024

To make your Google Sites as dynamic and interactive as possible, one option is to incorporate video. While embedding YouTube videos via Inserts > YouTube is straightforward, we've received requests for embedding video in the background.

Although embedding video as a background is not natively supported in the new Google Sites, there are workarounds to accomplish this.

Convert Video to Animated GIF

First, convert your video (such as an MP4 or AVI) into an animated GIF. Note that if the video is too long or high-quality, the GIF file will be large and may take time to load on your Google Sites. We recommend embedding very short videos.

Embedding an animated gif in the background section of google sites.

Option 1: Embed Animated GIF from Your Computer

Select the background in the section, and under Section Colors, choose Image > Upload. Then, select an animated GIF, and you will see the animation in the background.

Option 2: Embed Animated GIF from Google Drive

If you have an animated GIF file in your Google Drive, choose Image > Select > Google Drive and select the GIF file.

Option 3: Embed Animated GIF from a URL

You can choose Image > Select and then select the 'By URL' option. You can search for and add an animated GIF from a GIF search engine like Tenor by copying the image address.
